Venus in Fur is a funny and erotic take on the battle of the sexes with a slightly kinky twist. A playwright/director is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale Venus in Furs. Enter Vanda Jordan, a vulgar, frantic actress who missed her audition hours ago. The young actress seems at first to have no chance of landing the part, but slowly proves herself a talent and a force to match the director. A provocative, sexy drama that represents yet another departure for the multifaceted David Ives, writer of All in the Timing.

"Venus in Fur is David Ives' amazingly inventive and complex take on the 1870 novella 'Venus in Furs' by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.... I'm not at all 'ambivalent' about this production: it's a very fine one all around.... it is a marvel of counterpoint."

"The long one-act requires tour-de-force acting from both parties, and they both absolutely deliver it. I'm not sure that there are any roles in contemporary theater that are more demanding and intense than these two.... Brennan... is a star-making performance. Sheridan...I love her voice.... I hope we see her on stage a lot more often in Albuquerque."

"...director, Kristine Holtvedt...There's not a single hiccup, not one stage movement without motivation, not one single what-was-she-thinking directorial choice. If you're wondering if 21st century American theater has produced anything worth seeing yet, you really ought to see Venus in Fur."

"Best Production of 2013"

"Unspoken desires and hidden ambitions bubble to the surface in “Venus in Fur,” a steamy Tony-nominated comedy that’s making a regional debut at the Aux Dog Theatre.

Director Kristine Holtvedt says the two-person play, written by award-winning playwright David Ives, requires uncompromising honesty from the actors.

'It's a courageous performance. We're really fortunate to have Brennan Foster and Sheridan Johnson in these roles. The actors must show emotional, psychic and physical truth,' says Holtvedt, who heads the acting program at Purdue University and is visiting New Mexico on sabbatical. 'The characters are provocative, erotic and funny.'"
